Nostalgia

Katie Chan [she/her]
Toronto, Canada

My piece is entitled Nostalgia and and it is an embroidered diptych that depicts my memories of returning to China during my childhood summers. The first piece is called "夜班车" (Yè bānchē) which translates to "night train". My family and I often took trains that travelled through the night to get from city to city. The second piece in is called "公园" (Gōngyuán) which means "park". My family and I often spent the whole day at the parks in Beijing, playing on the structures, eating tanghulu, and listening to the loud cicadas. Remembering these summers in China spent at the park or traveling hold intense emotion and nostalgia for me, especially because I have not been back in over ten years.

This piece is not only a recording of memory for me, using a tactile sense of space (embroidery) vs photo documentation, but also also recording of my present day longing for a motherland and culture that I feel so far removed from.
