Eight Blank Pieces of Paper

Katherine Yang [she/her]
Hong Kong

In July 2020, Hong Kong authorities banned a popular protest slogan of eight characters: 「光復香港,時代革命。」(In English: "Liberate Hong Kong; Revolution of Our Times".) In response, creatives on social media produced and shared dozens of remarkably inventive graphics that obscured the characters to anyone who wasn't looking out for them. Most strikingly, physical protests were held at which activists held up blank pieces of paper, signifying the unspoken words they were now forbidden from proclaiming. The blank page, to me, is a deeply resonant symbol of the Hong Kong spirit: we are joined, even beyond weaponised words, in a fundamental resilience and hope.
