Anemone Cooling Pavilion

Jonathan Tolentino [he/him]
Fullerton, California

The following presenation was something my team had created for Biodesign class. Our team decided to create a prototype of a cooling pavilion with responsive architecture that synthesizes a special protein of the anemone in a special material called hydrogel, giving it responsiveness. This responsiveness makes way for the building to change according to temperature and light. The design is meant to be modular so the concept could be reassigned as other essentials such as a bus stop. I created an animation that portrays wind passing throughing the pavilion, serving as a simulator.

This was one of my favorite works because while I love media arts and major in it, I love the process of technical design and art. Stuff like programming in animation and architecture gives that perfect balance I need. When I was a young kid, I thought I should be in STEM or some fancy technical field so that I could look smart, after all thats what seemed reminiscent in Asian culture. But I've always loved writing, and the humanities, and arts based theories and design rather than the exact. While I'm not the exact stereotype, I do love the logic and efficiency that STEM fields are able to provide, which is why I also love computer progamming. Technical art and design opens a world for me in many ways, and I hope you see that too.
